Kumiko Coaster Kit
The 1,400-year-old craft of kumiko involves the intricate assembly of small pieces of wood without the use of nails or glue to make a delicate geometric patterns. The pieces are held together solely with the pressure that results from calculated and meticulous woodwork.
Like most kumiko motifs, the Asanoha and Uragoma designs are inspired by nature. The Asanoha pattern represents the hemp plant, which symbolizes growth and vitality. The Uragoma pattern depicts the opening of a pod of sesame seeds, which was regarded to have high medicinal value when first introduced to Japan in the 6th century, symbolizing a healthy and long life.
