Animals in a Sunny Spot Kutani Ware Mug Series
Kutani ware is a type of Japanese ceramic that includes both porcelain and stoneware produced in the southern region of Ishikawa Prefecture. It is celebrated for its dynamic, painterly overglaze decoration, often featuring traditional Japanese motifs such as kacho (flowers and birds) and sansui (landscapes). These vivid and expressive designs are found not only on everyday tableware like plates and bowls but also on art pieces.
These mugs, from the popular Sunny Spot series, showcase delightful illustrations of animals snuggled together. Enhanced with seasonal motifs like cherry blossoms, Japanese pampas grass, and snowflakes, each design exudes a sense of Japanese culture.
This is a collaboration between Kokuzou Kiln, which creates the body of the mug, and Atelier Yu, which paints the design.
Four designs are available: cats, rabbits, cows and shima enaga, a bird also known as the Japanese snow fairy.
The mug’s round shape and generous size make it ideal for tea, coffee, lattes, and soup alike, while the thin lip and wide handle make it easy to hold and sip from. The slightly rough, earthy texture of the stoneware contrasts with the smooth Japanese paints and raised details for a pleasing tactile experience.
